Your Pass Certificate
On the day you pass, the examiner will take your provisional licence and issue you with a pass certificate. This certificate allows you to drive a car immediately as a fully licensed driver — you don't need to wait for your full licence to arrive.
Your Full Licence
Your full driving licence arrives by post within three weeks. If you applied for your provisional online with a UK passport, it's usually faster. Keep your pass certificate safe until your full licence arrives.
Sort Your Insurance Before You Drive
This is critical — you must have valid insurance before you drive after passing. If you've been a named driver on a parent's policy as a learner, that cover ends when you pass your test.
Contact your insurer as soon as possible. New driver insurance can be expensive — shop around, consider telematics (black box) policies, and be honest about your experience. Driving uninsured carries a minimum fine of £300, six penalty points, and can result in a driving ban.
The First Few Weeks
The transition from learner to independent driver is significant. You'll suddenly be making decisions without an instructor next to you. This is normal and most new drivers find it slightly daunting at first.
Build your confidence gradually:
- Stick to familiar roads initially
- Avoid motorways and complex road systems until you feel ready
- Drive in good conditions first — avoid night driving and wet roads until you're more comfortable
Consider a Pass Plus Course
Pass Plus is an optional training scheme that covers motorway driving, night driving, rural roads, and adverse weather. Some insurers offer discounts to Pass Plus holders. Ask your Way2Go instructor for details.
