Engine Oil Level

The Question

"Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil."

What to Say and Do

1. Open the bonnet and identify the dipstick — it usually has a brightly coloured (yellow or orange) handle marked with an oil can symbol
2. Say: "I would remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth, reinsert it fully, then withdraw it and check the oil level is between the minimum and maximum markers."
3. Add: "The oil should be clear — not milky or gritty. If the level is low, I would top it up with the correct grade of oil as specified in the owner's manual."

Why It Matters

Engine oil lubricates the moving parts inside the engine. Without sufficient oil, metal components rub against each other, causing rapid wear and potentially catastrophic engine damage. Checking oil regularly — ideally before every long journey — is basic car ownership.

Key Points to Remember

• The dipstick must be removed, wiped, reinserted, then withdrawn again to get an accurate reading
• Check when the engine is cold or has been off for at least 10 minutes
• The oil level should sit between the two markers on the dipstick
