According to DVSA data, the average learner takes around 45 hours of professional lessons before passing their practical test. Most also supplement this with private practice.
This is an average — some people take 20 hours, some take 80. Neither is unusual.
What Affects How Many Lessons You'll Need?
- Previous experience: Any time spent in a car — even as a passenger observing traffic — can help. Private practice between lessons accelerates progress significantly.
- Lesson frequency: Weekly lessons build skills more consistently than sporadic ones. Long gaps between lessons mean you spend time re-learning rather than progressing.
- Lesson length: Two-hour lessons are more efficient than one-hour lessons — you spend less time warming up each session.
- How you learn: Everyone is different. Some people pick things up very quickly; others need more time to build confidence. Neither reflects on your intelligence or ability as a driver.
A Realistic Expectation
Plan for 40–50 hours as a starting point. Your instructor will give you honest, ongoing feedback about your progress — and a realistic timeframe for when you might be test-ready.
Important: Don't let cost pressure you into booking a test before you're ready. An early test that fails costs more — in fees, time, and confidence — than an extra few lessons first.
