Before you can start driving lessons on public roads, you must hold a provisional driving licence issued by the DVLA. Your instructor must check your licence before your first lesson.

Who Can Apply?

  • You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old to apply
  • You can start driving on public roads at 17
  • You must be a Great Britain resident

How to Apply

The easiest way is online at gov.uk. You'll need:

  • Your UK passport (or National Insurance number if you don't have one)
  • Your addresses for the last three years
  • A credit or debit card — it costs £34 to apply online

Your licence typically arrives within one week. You can also apply by post using form D1, available from Post Offices.

What Does It Look Like?

Your provisional licence is a photocard — the same size and format as a credit card. The front shows your photo, name, address, and date of birth. The back shows the categories of vehicle you're licensed to drive (category B for cars).

Tip: Apply as soon as you're eligible — don't wait until you've booked your first lesson. Having your licence ready means you can start immediately.
