Before You Book

You can book your theory test as soon as you have your provisional driving licence. You don't need to have had any lessons first — though we'd recommend having studied the material before booking so you have a target date to work toward.

How to Book

Book online at gov.uk/book-theory-test. You'll need:

  • Your provisional driving licence number
  • Your email address
  • A debit or credit card

The cost is £23. You choose your preferred test centre and a date and time that suits you.

Changing or Cancelling

You can change or cancel your test online up to three clear working days before your appointment. Cancel with less notice and you forfeit the fee.

On the Day

Bring your provisional driving licence photocard to the test centre — without it, you won't be able to sit the test. Arrive a few minutes early to allow time to check in.

You'll be shown to a cubicle with a touchscreen computer. The test centre staff will walk you through how the system works before you start.

Tip: Book your test before you feel completely ready. Having a date booked motivates revision and focuses your preparation. Most learners find they're better prepared than they expected on the day.
