The Two Parts
The theory test has two separate sections, both taken in the same sitting at a DVSA test centre:
1. Multiple Choice (50 questions)
You'll be shown 50 questions on a touchscreen computer, drawn from the official DVSA question bank. Topics include:
- Road signs and markings
- The Highway Code
- Vehicle safety and loading
- Rules for different road types and conditions
- Eco-safe driving
- First aid
Pass mark: 43 out of 50. You have 57 minutes.
2. Hazard Perception (14 video clips)
You watch 14 video clips filmed from a driver's perspective. Each clip contains at least one developing hazard — one clip contains two. You click whenever you spot a hazard starting to develop.
Scoring: the earlier you click within the hazard's window, the higher your score (maximum 5 points per hazard). The final clip's two hazards each score a maximum of 5 points.
Pass mark: 44 out of 75.
You Must Pass Both Parts
Both sections must be passed in the same sitting. If you pass one and fail the other, you must retake the full test. There is a minimum waiting period of three days before you can resit.
How Long Is the Pass Certificate Valid?
Your theory test pass certificate is valid for two years. You must pass your practical test within that window, or you'll need to retake the theory.
